GREAT COMMANMENT

THE KEY TO A FULL LIFE...

A self-important teacher of the Law was, once again, trying to trip Jesus up: “What do I need to do to get eternal life?”  Jesus sighed, knowing the answer was already blatantly clear in the very Law of which this man was supposed to be an expert. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” So Jesus smiles in mock surprise, addressing the teacher like a pupil: “You have answered correctly,” he says. “Do this and you will live” (Luke 10:25-28).

Zinzendorf and his friends had decided to chart the course of their lives entirely by just three guiding stars:  love for God, love for their neighbor and thus – inevitably – love for the lost as well. In so doing they had correctly identified the very essence of what, according to scripture, it means to live well, fully and even eternally.

“Do this,” says Jesus, “and you will live.”
